I am from the farming country of Indiana and Pulaski is the largest town in which I have ever lived. I began Martin Methodist College after I had been out of high school eleven years and three daughters later. Once I started, I found I really enjoyed college (not so much high school). I transferred to George Peabody College for Teachers at Vanderbilt University and found I had a passion for special education. As a result of this passion, I have a BS with licensure in elementary education and special education, an MA in special education, and thirteen years later I had obtained my Ed.D. I worked for the Giles County School System for 28 years (26 of those years in the classroom and two years in administration). When Martin implemented a bachelor’s degree, I started teaching as an adjunct in the night program the first year. The Academic Dean would call me the day a class was to start, ask if I would teach it, and bring the textbook to my classroom door. About eight years later I became the chair of the education division and coordinator of the elementary education program. I believe change is good and this was a great move for me. I love working with college students and my office door is always open.
During all this time, I found my love for gardening helped me to relax. I can get on the lawn mower and let the world go by. I work with flowers and have since I was 14. I also like to hike and have spent time on the Appalachian Trail in the upper elevations of the Great Smoky Mountains. My most recent adventurous vacation was riding the mule down the Grand Canyon, then taking a helicopter down and rafting the Colorado River for 4 days and 3 nights—yes, it is just like you see in the videos. I also like to read as a way to escape and usually have one novel on the bed side table all the time.
