Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Program (IEP) at Martin Methodist College

The IEP is an institutional credit-bearing program for anyone who wishes to study academic English. The IEP is very intensive.  Participants will be in class twenty hours per week; attendance, participation, and demonstrable progress are required.  In addition, students participate in cultural events including weekend excursions and extracurricular activities.

Coursework
There are five core courses: speaking, listening, grammar, reading, and writing.  These classes have been offered as 2- and 3-hour institutional credit-bearing courses.

ESL 095 — Speaking                                                                             2 or 3 hours institutional credit
This course will focus on the basic oral skills needed for academic discourse, with emphasis on academic presentations, vocabulary acquisition, fluency and accuracy in speaking and pronunciation.

ESL 096 — Listening                                                                             2 or 3 hours institutional credit
This course will focus on the basic aural skills needed for academic discourse, with emphasis on general listening comprehension, lecture situations, vocabulary acquisition, and active listening skills.

ESL 097 — Grammar                                                                            2 or 3 hours institutional credit
This course will focus on developing morphosyntactical, semantic, and pragmatic competence with grammatical structures.

ESL 098 — Reading                                                                              2 or 3 hours institutional credit
This course will focus on the basic critical reading skills needed for success in academic environments, with emphasis on the application of reading strategies to a variety of academic texts, reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and phonemic awareness (with phonics).

ESL 099 — Writing                                                                                2 or 3 hours institutional credit
This course will focus on the mechanics of academic writing, with emphasis on writing as a process and vocabulary acquisition.


        Cultural Events and Extracurricular Activities

During recent programs, participants attended the Pulaski Fourth of July Celebration in Pulaski, Tennessee; camped out at Fall Creek Falls State Park in Pikeville, Tennessee; visited the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama; attended the “Children’s Reading Carnival at Southside Elementary School” and “Red Carpet Horse Show of the South” in Pulaski, Tennessee; boated at David Crockett State Park in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee; attended Bluegrass, Country, and Gospel music concerts in Pulaski, Tennessee; and toured Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee.  Participants also played sports and used the indoor swimming pool: they had full access to the Curry Christian Life Center, the college’s sports complex.
