BACHELORS DEGREE IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Martin Methodist College’s Division of Education is dedicated to the development of education professionals that are prepared to participate in professional, social, and technological change; who are committed to lifelong learning, service, and continuing professional development through inquiry and reflective practice; and who work in partnership with a range of constituents to effect change at the local level.
The Physical Education program offers three areas of study: K-12 Physical Education (Licensure), Physical Education (Non-Licensure), and Physical Education with an emphasis in Fitness Management (Non-Licensure). All physical education programs lead to a Bachelor of Science degree. Completing the degree requirements for our K-12 physical education degree in the Division of Education certifies a graduate to teach physical education in the state of Tennessee from kindergarten through grade 12. Physical education in schools is taught by trained professionals who hold certificates indicating they have passed the requirements to be licensed as teachers in their states. Many certified physical education teachers also gain employment teaching at YMCAs/YWCAs, fitness centers, health spas, community or recreation centers and private sport clubs. One does not have to be certified to teach physical education in those settings, but a teacher certificate is often an advantage when competing for jobs.
GOALSGraduates of the Bachelor's Degree program in Physical Education will:
- Master information from courses taken in general education and physical education.
- Exemplify high standards of social, intellectual, emotional, academic, and professional behavior.
- Promote Judeo-Christian values and ethics as they relate to their students, peers, administrators, and parents.
- Nurture their students by modeling and promoting the ideals of American democracy and personal wellness.
Regulations in effect at the time the student is admitted to the appropriate program within the Division of Education shall be considered binding unless directed otherwise by the Tennessee State Department of Education. That department periodically revises the requirements governing teacher licensure in the state of Tennessee. Therefore, degree requirements leading to licensure in all Martin Methodist College (MMC) teacher education programs are subject to change from those published in the college catalog.Education students are required to seek advisement from their mentors and/or the program coordinator as early as possible in the program of study to ensure that bothdegree requirements and licensure requirements are met.
