Annually rated by students as one of the most outstanding teachers on campus, Ralph grew up in nearby Marshall County, Tennessee. He holds both B.S. and M.S. degrees in biology from Middle Tennessee State University and has done additional graduate work and research at Cornell University, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, Middle Tennessee State University, and the University of Tennessee. He has over 50 years of total teaching experience at both the secondary and college levels. He has taught at Smyrna High School, Giles County High School, and Richland High School, in addition to 21 years of teaching experience at Martin Methodist College. His teaching expertise is primarily in the area of zoology and includes such courses as Human Anatomy and Physiology, Embryology, Vertebrate Anatomy, Ecology, and Microbiology. He has also taught the introductory course in Physical science from time to time. His hobbies include working with plants; grafting nut and fruit trees; and growing small fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, and muscadines. He does research on growing small fruit, nut, and timber trees on marginally productive land, and is a member of the Tennessee Small Fruits and Vegetable Association, and the Northern Nut Growers Association.
