Dr. Allen grew up in south central Texas where she attended Texas Lutheran University. As an undergraduate student, Dr. Allen majored in chemistry and in music. She was a member of the concert band, played the clarinet in University wind ensembles, performed in a number of recitals, and taught private clarinet lessons in her spare time. She particularly enjoyed her time in the laboratory and presented her undergraduate research at both the National ACS Conference and the Southwest Regional meeting. Dr. Allen received her Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Baylor University. While at Baylor she was both a teaching and research assistant and was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in Teaching. Before coming to Martin, Dr. Allen taught at Radford University in Virginia. Her teaching interests primarily focus upon organic chemistry, organic synthesis, organic spectroscopy, advanced organic chemistry, biochemistry, and analytical chemistry. Her research interests are broadly directed toward the development of new methods for the practical synthesis of chiral and achiral organic molecules. When Dr. Allen is not in the classroom or laboratory, she enjoys being outdoors, listening to music, attending concerts, reading, playing video games, and working on various projects. She enjoys staying current in her field by attending conferences in chemistry and being a member of the American Chemical Society and the Organic Division of the American Chemical Society.
