International Studies Program

See the World, For Credit!
The idea of the International Studies Program was proposed as a unique way for Martin Methodist College students to experience other cultures and people. This idea was brought to reality four years ago with the first International Studies trip to France.
Each student who participates in this program receives three college credit hours in liberal arts to study a foreign language abroad. Students spend three weeks in a country and learn their language and participate in workshops like wine tasting, learning the art of French cuisine, French expression and many other activities that are unique to each country. Not only are there workshops, but also excursions to the beaches of France, exploring the caves of the area, and the opportunities to enjoy the nightlife as well.
This program also brings students from Martin Methodist College together with students from Green Mountain College in Vermont. Not only, do students get to experience another culture, but they also get to experience students from different areas of the United States.
Participation is increasing each year and now with the addition of two more trips we expect that this program will be one of the most attractive ways to earn college credit in the near future.
This year there is a special studies trip to Brazil where students and faculty will have an opportunity to gain experience in environmental studies. Under the direction of Dr. Amos Nascimento, Director of International Affairs and Professor of Philosophy at Brazil’s Universidad Metodista de Piracicaba (UNIMEP), students will learn about and experience environmental development and .
There is also a new foreign language study in Argentina so students can experience the South American country’s culture and language firsthand. Each student will experience all that Argentina has to offer including visiting museums, going to sporting events, and a day trip to Buenos Aires. Dr. Roger Ireson, professor of Philosophy at MMC, is working with the faculty at the Universidad Del Centro Educativo Latino Americano in Rosario, Argentina to develop an intensive language and culture study between the two schools.
The trip to France will also be offered again this year. For several years students have enjoyed being immersed in the French culture and language.
The cost of each trip is approximately $3300 dollars each, but thanks to Mr. Jim Moon, Martin Methodist trustee, and other friends of the college, scholarships are available.
This International Studies program is a great way to spend three weeks of your summer! Instead of hanging out in your hometown, consider spending three weeks in a new country, with new people, new languages, and oh yeah, don’t forget about the three college credits you will receive.
