The Story Center

Who Cares?

Do you?

About What?

We think your work should be seen.  We think your voice should be heard.

How?

Research papers, photographs, essays, non-fiction, creative writing, art, poetry....

This summer The Story Center will publish a magazine aptly named, Who Cares?  The magazine will be distributed during Pride Days.  The magazine is one element of a long term project the Story Center is undertaking to document the many ways Martin students are exposed to the complexities of the human condition. It will give students a chance to express themselves and/or share their understanding of any topic that falls under the heading, "human condition."   All disciplines explore the human condition in some form.  This magazine will bring together student work from all corners of the campus, from science to history to art and sports.

The submission does not have to actually ask, Who Cares?  The question can be directly asked and answered or the work can present a topic in such a way that we learn something new, see something from a new perspective or find ourselves caring about topics we had not considered before. There is a lot of room for interpretation of the title. The reader or viewer should feel that the author, photographer or artist cared about their subject matter.

Here at The Story Center, we believe stories help define who we are, who we want to be, how we see others and how to become better community members and citizens of the world.

Using a blend of oral history, traditional research, field techniques, non-fiction narrative tools and a lot of empathy, we create stories that live and breathe and make a difference.

Students from all disciplines use The Story Center as a place to gather and support each other. Students leave Martin Methodist with both skills and a broad worldview that translate to almost any career choice, from documentary filmmaker to humanitarian activist to doctor.

The Story Center also acts as a mini-journalism school for students interested in media careers. We publish the campus newspaper, The RedHawk Reporter, and plan to spread our wings into the magazine world and online soon.  We are working on a literary journal.  We publish The Martinaire, one of the longest running yearbooks in the country.  We're busy.
