Gamma Beta Phi, an honor and service organization for college students in any discipline formed in 1964 as an outgrowth of the high school Beta Club organization, has about 40,000 active members nationwide. Students must rank in the top 20% of their class and remain active through community service and academic excellence. The name is derived from the initial letters of the three Greek words for education, life, and friendship. The society motto is Progressus per Eruditionem (progress through education); its watchwords are Scholarship, Service, and Character.
