MEMPHIS/TENNESSEE/HOLSTON Course of Study

What is Course of Study?
The Course of Study is prescribed by the Division of Ordained Ministry of the United Methodist Church to ensure the education of local pastors. Persons choosing to enter ministry as local pastors must complete a five-year course of study.

This educational plan provides an alternative to Seminary education.

Who May Attend?
These courses are offered for part-time local pastors only. To be admitted to the program, one must:
1) be a certified candidate for ordained ministry 2) complete requirements for license as a local pastor;
and 3) receive endorsement by the Annual Conference Board of Ordained Ministry.

Attendance and Make-Up Work
The Memp/TN/HOLS COS offers four Schools a year on two campuses simultaneously, Hiwassee College in Madisonville and Martin Methodist College in Pulaski. Students may take one course in each of the four Schools. Each course requires two weekends (twenty hours) to complete. Attendance is required at each class. Anyone who misses any portion of a class period must first obtain the permission of both the instructor and the director of the COS, and must then satisfactorily complete, within two weeks of the close of the School, the make-up work assigned by the instructor. Under no circumstances may credit be received for a course in which the student missed more than four hours of class or failed to get all required work to the instructor within two weeks of the close of the School.
