Course of Study

MEMPHIS/TENNESSEE/HOLSTON COURSE OF STUDY

An Extension of the Emory Course of Study

Course of Study

The Course of Study is required by the Division of Ordained Ministry of the United Methodist Church to ensure the education of Local Pastors. Persons choosing to enter ministry as Local Pastors must complete a five year course of study. This educational plan provides an alternative to seminary education.  These courses are offered for part-time Local Pastors only. Program requirements are: be a certified candidate for ordained ministry; complete requirements for license as a Local Pastor; and receive endorsement by the Annual Conference Board of Ordained Ministry.

Basic Information

Courses are offered on two campuses, simultaneously, four times a year: February/March, April/May, September, and October/November.  Five courses are offered in each session.  Occasionally a course has to be canceled.  Each course requires two weekends to complete. Classes are three hours on Friday evenings and seven hours on Saturdays. Attendance at all sessions is expected. Any absence must be approved by the instructor and the Director of Course of Study, and the instructor will give a make-up assignment that must be completed within two weeks of the close of the class. Credit will not be given to those who miss more than four hours of class.  Writing materials and textbooks are needed for all class meetings.

How to Register

Registration forms are available from the District Superintendent, the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry, COS Registrar, or www.martinmethodist.edu/ccl/education/courses. Upon receipt of the Registration Form and fee, pre-course and reading assignments will be sent to confirm registration.
