Before starting your research, do the following:
  • Gather your MMC I.D. card and set up your library record.
  • Create a password for Net Library.
DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK THE LIBRARY STAFF FOR ASSISTANCE.

Need ideas for a research topic?

  • Go to the reference section and find a subject specific encyclopedia to browse.
    • Reader’s Guide to American History R 973 R 286p
    • Oxford Encyclopedia of American Literature R 810.3 O 98
  • You could also check a resource like CQ Researcher (found in the serials display). Each issue focuses on a single current newsworthy topic.
  • Checking an index like Humanities Index may provide you with topic alternatives or help you narrow or broaden your search.
  • The Issues & Controversies database is a good source for pro-con papers.
  • If you are having problems coming up with search terms on the Internet, try Key Word Map.
  • Check your class text book.
  • Consult class notes.

Ready to begin?

  • Check the library catalog, the OPAC, to see what titles the library has available.
  • Check Net Library.
  • Look at subject pathfinders for suggested books, databases and web sites.
  • Consult one of the library's journal indexes. For instance, check Social Sciences Index for journal articles on subjects such as economics, criminal justice and psychology .
  • Check the serials holdings and electronic journals lists on the library website to see if the library has access to the journal articles you are interested in.
  • Look for a database that may help in your search. The library has several subject specific (LION) and some comprehensive ones (Project MUSE).
  • If you have enough time you may also make use of ILL (Interlibrary Loan) to obtain books and journal articles that are either checked out or not available in the library.
