Freshman Maria Charrys crowned Ms. Martin 2011

Twenty-four Martin Methodist College students vie for annual pageant title

A freshman business major was named Ms. Martin 2011 on Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Maria Charrys, a 19-year-old first-year student from Valledupar, Colombia, was crowned in the annual pageant held in Martin Hall Auditorium. She is a member of the RedHawk women’s tennis team and The RedHawk Reporter newspaper staff. The pageant winner receives a $1,000 scholarship from Martin Methodist.

She was selected from 24 contestants who took the stage at the beginning of the evening. Judging the event this year were: Emily Pitcock, a vice president at First National Bank who has been involved with state fair pageants for a number of years; Jamie Hyatt Hollis, who is employed by the Giles County Board of Education and owner of Tumble Town gymnastics in Pulaski; and Overton Campbell, a 1975 graduate of Martin College who serves as an attorney for American General Life and Accident Insurance Co. in Nashville.

The other four finalists were:
 

  • First runner-up Sharah Dass, 21, a sophomore accounting major from Karachi, Pakistan, who is a member of the Student Government Association and serves as the senator from the sophomore class;
  • Second runner-up Bianca Sandifer, 23, a senior music performance major from Tanner, Ala., who is a member of the Richland Creek music ensemble. She was also named Ms. Congeniality.
  • Third runner-up Baleigh Price, 19, a sophomore psychology major from Leoma, Tenn., who is a member of the RedHawk cheerleading squad;
  • Fourth-runner up Kayla Kizer, 18, a freshman sport management major from Culleoka, Tenn., who is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the RedHawk volleyball team;

Other contestants in the Ms. Martin Pageant were:

  • Emily Ambrose, 22, a senior nursing major from Lawrenceburg, Tenn., who serves as treasurer of the Student Nurse Organization;
  • Tara Amderson, 23, a senior nursing major from Waynesboro, Tenn., who is a member of the Student Nurse Organization;
  • Alesha Buie, 20, a junior biology major from Collinwood, Tenn., who is a member of the Student Activity Council;
  • Lindsey Daniel, 18, a freshman from Pulaski;
  • Heather Dunkin, 21, a junior nursing major/biology minor from Loretto, Tenn., who is a member of the Student Activity Council;
  • Chaé Ellis, 21, a junior accounting major from Fayetteville, Tenn., who is a member of the RedHawk softball team;
  • Lacy Fanning, 21, a senior nursing major from Fayetteville, Tenn., who is a member of the Student Nurse Organization and the Nursing Student Advisory Board;
  • Kayla Gowan, 21, a junior biology major from Pulaski;
  • Katherine Hamill, 23, a senior business management major from Portadown, Northern Ireland, who serves as president of the Student Activity Council;
  • Holly Hatchett, 20, a junior elementary elementary major from Manchester, Tenn., who is a member of the RedHawk cheerleading squad and the American Red Cross club;
  • Breana Holley, 19, a freshman sports medicine major from Pulaski, who is a member of the RedHawk women’s basketball team;
  • Erin Kincade, 18, a freshman from Chapel Hill, Tenn., who is a member of the RedHawks’ women’s soccer junior varsity team and a member of the Thomas Martin Society and Student Advisory Board;
  • Kristin Myers, 21, a senior business management major from Pensacola, Fla., who is a member of the RedHawk bowling team;
  • Chelsey Pierce, 20, a freshman secondary education major from Manchester, Tenn., who is a member of the RedHawk cheerleading squad and the American Red Cross club;
  • Carissa Pilkinton, 19, a sophomore criminal justice major from Summertown, Tenn., who is a member of the Martin Brothers and Sisters;
  • Abbey Roark, 23, a senior physical education major/biology minor from Murfreesboro, Tenn., who is student assistant coach of the RedHawk women’s soccer team;
  • Delaney Shrader, 20, a sophomore sports medicine major from Summertown, Tenn., who is a member of the Student Activity Council;
  • Karlie Slaton, 18, a freshman psychology major from Decatur, Ala., a member of the Thomas Martin Society, the Drama Club, choir and Student Christian Association; and
  • Antoinette Taylor, 23, a senior criminal justice major from Detroit, Mich.
