Homecoming festivities will make for busy week on campus

Numerous events to be held Monday, Feb. 13, through Saturday, Feb. 18

2/8/2012

Last year's Homecoming Queen, Emily Allen a 2011 graduate, will return to Martin Methodist College on Saturday, Feb. 18, to join President Ted Brown in crowning the 2012 Homecoming Queen and King.

The Martin Methodist College campus will be especially busy the week of Feb. 13 with 2012 Homecoming activities.

Special events begin on Monday, Feb. 13, and continue each day, culminating with the crowning of the Homecoming Queen and King during halftime of the men’s basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Among the featured events will be a musical comedy, "The Glory Bugles in ‘800 Miles Off Broadway," at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, in Martin Hall Auditorium. The show, which features a lovable, if slightly off-key gospel quartet hailing from the fictional town of Box Springs, Tennessee, is part of the college’s Della Clayton Lee Cultural Arts Series. The Glory Bugles are, in reality, four talented actors from Nashville who have been doing their clever parody for two decades.

Admission for the performance is $7 per person, with all students (kindergarten through college) as well as members of the Martin Methodist College Alumni Association admitted free of charge.

Another highlight of the weekend is the annual Sports Hall of Fame luncheon, beginning at 11 a.m. in the Upperman Room, located on the second floor of Martin Hall. Being inducted for 2012 are: the late Jimmie Watson Bearden, a member of the women’s basketball team in 1950-51 and 1951-52; the late Tommy Barnes, a member of the men’s basketball team in 1963-64 and 1964-65; and the 1952-53 women’s basketball team. The inductees will be formally announced at halftime of the RedHawk women’s basketball game against Cumberland University, which begins at 2 p.m. The men’s game against Cumberland will follow at 4 p.m.

Student activities throughout the week will include a basketball shoot-out on Monday evening, a Homecoming dance on Wednesday evening, a "Fear Factor/Hollywood Edition" on Thursday evening, and a bonfire following the Della Clayton Lee event on Friday night. The Martin Players will also perform "Blithe Spirit" Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings in Martin Hall Auditorium, beginning at 7 p.m.
