Intramural Basketball Rules

**Varsity athletes are not allowed to play an intramural sport in which they are receiving VARSITY scholarship, are on the varsity roster, dress out for this varsity sport, or report to any coach.

*If you are receiving athletic scholarship in this sport; you may not participate in this sport, but you may serve as coach. Only one registered coach per team, beginning 2013-2014

*If you compete for Martin Methodist College (MMC) at any level during this academic year in this sport or are reporting to a coach during this academic year; you may not compete in this sport, but you may serve as coach.

 

****FOUL LANGUAGE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED**** ---You will receive a warning then a technical foul by the referee or supervisor.

All HIGH SCHOOL rules will govern play with exception of the following:

TIME

  • The game will consist of two 20-minute halves and 5-minute overtime if necessary.
  • Teams must wear the same color shirts or have a red penny on.  NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • The clock will run non-stop until the final minutes of each half.
  • The clock will stop during the last minute of the first half; and the last two minutes of the second half, the clock will stop on all dead balls and made baskets.
  • An official or team time-out will stop the clock.
  • A regulation men’s ball will be played with at all times.
  • Time-outs will last one minute and half-time will last two minutes.
  • Teams have three (3) 30 second time-outs per half.  (No half roll-overs)
  • The clock will stop if there is less than 1 minute to play and the score is within 10 points.

FEMALES

  • You must have one female on the floor at all times, and at least two on the roster.
  • Both teams must have an equal number of females on the floor at all times up to two females.
  • There must be two females on the court at all times or the team has to play a man down.
  • You must have one female present to avoid a forfeit.
  • Every female score will equal plus one point to a male score (1 pt = 2 pts, 2 pts = 3 pts, 3 pts = 4 pts)

FOULS

  • Two technical fouls on a player or coach will result in an automatic ejection from the game. The ejected player must also leave the playing area for the rest of the evening and will have to sit out the next game (and is permitted in the gym the next game).
  • If you received 2 ejections you will not be allowed to finish the IM season.
  • 2 Technical Fouls  or 1 Flagrant – Ejected
  • Teams will enter the bonus on the 7th team foul.
  • On a teams 10th foul, all fouls will result in two free throws.
  • Any player fouled on a 3-point attempt and the basket not good will be allowed to shoot three free throws.
  • 5 personal fouls on an individual will be ejected for the remainder of that game.

MERCY RULE

  • Either there will be a 35-point mercy rule after 10 minutes in the second half or a 25-point mercy rule in the last 5 minutes of the second half.

OTHER RULES

  • No basket may be scored on a player control (charging) foul, regardless of when the ball is released.
  • If ball touches the shot clock it is not in play.
  • Ball must pass half court within 10 seconds.
  • A player has 5 seconds to throw the ball in.
  • In the judgment of the officials and supervisor, if a team is dragging or allows the team behind to make up baskets so the game will not be stopped, the game will be stopped immediately.
  • Substitutes must report to the score's table and beckoned in by the officials. Illegal substitutions will result in a technical foul on the player substituting into the game
  • Slapping the backboard is not a technical in itself, but intentionally hitting the backboard hard enough to alter the flight of the ball will result in a technical.  The basket will be counted and team will get 2 foul shots.
  • The first dunk is ejection and suspension from the next game, second dunk is ejection from the IM sport for the year. 
  • Any popping of the rim will result in a technical and ejection for the season.
  • No dunking in practice – same rules apply as dunking during a game.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. The following behaviors will result in a technical foul and the possibility of a game suspension.
  • Cursing at the officials, supervisors, or opposing players; Insulting the officials, supervisors, or opposing players, participating in a fight (AUTOMATIC EJECTION)-Other unsportsmanlike acts will also earn a technical foul.
  • All unsportsmanlike fouls result in two free throws and the ball, regardless of whether the foul is on a player or the bench.
  • Please be a respectful to players, red and officials.
  • Please have your team arrive at least 15mins to a game.
