Laglia Honored with Exemplary Student Award
May 15, 2017
The Martin Methodist College (MMC) Alumni Association Exemplary Student Award is presented to the student who, in the opinion of the Alumni Council, has exhibited through word and deed, one or more of MMC’s core values: Nurture, Honor, Diversity and Compassion. Although a student must be in academic good standing to be eligible, the award is not based on academic achievement; it is based primarily on a student’s exhibition of these values.
The Exemplary Student Award is presented twice each school year, at Opening Convocation and at Honor’s Convocation. The Award consists of a memento, a $100.00 check and a $100.00 gift certificate to the college bookstore. Students are nominated by members of the faculty, coaching staff and administration.
Regina Laglia was selected to receive the award because she“exhibits (the values of Nurture, Honor, Diversity and Compassion) interlaced with each other. She has a real love for young children, particularly for those who are disadvantaged and those from diverse populations. She plans to be an elementary teacher and has done lots of work with young children. Most of these children are very low income. She is particularly good with those who are struggling. Her patience, kindness, and compassion are very evident as she teaches and nurtures these children. Part of her ability to connect with these children is due to her having come from a similar background. She has helped low income children at Pulaski Elementary School in the Leaps and Bounds Program, and with the summer learning grant to use differentiated instruction to help children who have fallen behind in reading. She also volunteered and worked fundraisers for the Giles County Pop Warner Football League.”
Regina was the valedictorian of her high school class. At Martin, she has worked 25 to 30 hours a week despite taking a full class load every semester and averaging an impressive grade point average. She is also a member of the MMC Bowling Team and was twice named Mid-South Conference Bowler of the Week this academic year. Congratulations, Regina!
