Martin Methodist Sport Management Students Participate in Ticket Sales Boot Camp
February 14, 2018February 11, 2018 – On Sunday afternoon, Martin Methodist College Sport Management students had the opportunity to learn from one of sports’ leading experts in ticket sales and customer service as part of an afternoon seminar. The event entitled Sports Industry Fast Pass “Boot Camp” was conducted by Marty Mulford, Senior Director of Service and Retention for the Nashville Predators. The 4-hour “Boot Camp” included lecture, discussion, interaction, and role-playing as students were introduced to the world of ticket sales and its importance within the sports industry. Tim Wilson, Assistant Professor of Sport Management, stated, “This event was something Marty and I have been working on since last semester. I was able to secure a Tennessee Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (TAHPERD) grant that provided the funds to bring him to our campus and allow our Sport Management students the opportunity to learn from one of the best. I want to thank TAHPERD for providing the funds and Marty for being willing to come on a Sunday afternoon and be with us. This was a great event for Martin Methodist Sport Management students”. The event provided the students an opportunity to hear first-hand what it takes to get into the sports industry and how ticket sales can be a great starting point. Dalton Searcy, a senior sport management student from Knoxville, Tennessee, added, “Mr. Mulford’s expertise and experience in the field provided great insight as to what it takes to get started on the sales side of the sports industry. I would like to thank Mr. Mulford, Mr. Wilson, and Martin Methodist for providing us this unique opportunity”.

Third Annual Trinidad Research Trip is Success
June 28, 2017Left to Right: Madeline Woods (Sophmore Biology major) from Murfreesboro, TN; Dr. Doug Dorer (Associate Biology professor MMC); Keisha Alexis (Biology teacher at Toco Secondary School, Toco, Trinidad); CalliAnna McDonald (Junior Biology major) from Hohenwald, TN; Dr. Stanton Belford (Assistant Biology professor MMC) In its third year, the MMC study abroad trip to Trinidad was once again a success. The group arrived on June 18, right on the cusp of Tropical Storm Bret. Drs. Stanton Belford and Doug Dorer used the aftermath of the storm for a learning experience by having the MMC students collect data on coral distribution after the storm activity to determine what effects the storm had on distribution. The group went on an excursion to the Asa Wrights Nature Center where they toured the beautiful, mountainous area to view various hummingbirds and trees. Dr. Dorer spent his birthday doing one of his favorite things—viewing birds. This was a big hit with the students and will be added as part of the Spring Breakaway activities. Also, the group visited a turtle sanctuary where students had the opportunity to guide baby leatherback turtles from the streets back toward the direction of the ocean. On the last day of the trip, MMC faculty and students presented two microscopes to the biology teacher at Toco Secondary School located in Trinidad, within the vicinity of the coral reef, strengthening the bond between MMC and this high school. Thanks to the Alumni Council, the Biology Department, Gamma Beta Phi and our international studies adviser, Dr. George Cheatham, for their continued support in this program.
